Tips For Your First 5K

featured image

Summertime is racing season. Each week there are contemporary 5ks popping up in and around the city. A 5k is the perfect running goal for a beginner. I totald my very first 5k two years ago in Atlantic City at the Color Run. Running a 5k has been on my summer bucket list for several years and was the first time I ever totald a race. Here are my survival tips for beginners just like me.

Prepare The Night Before

I was full of pre-race jitters days before my actual race. So, The night before I laid out all of my gear: my clothes, shoes, bib, headphones and fitness tracker, to make certain I had minimal leangs to stress about on the morning of the race.

Acquire There Early

There are alalert enough nerves to go around for a “first-time” event. Display up at least one hour before the race starts, this allows you to get a feel for the track and your fellow racers.

Take Your Mark

This meaning, know who you are and what kind of fitness level you are at. If you start in the front, you might crash and burn early into the race. If you’re in the back, you might start behind the “5K walkers”.

Focus On Your Pace

Personally, I get rapid bursts of adrenaline and pull out sprints that final a few moments only making me rapidly crash and burn. Towards the end, I slowly began to find my personal pace. Discovering a pace might take some practice but will help tremendously in the end.

Stop To Hydrate

Your car can run off fumes, neither can you. Take advantage of the hydrating stations. Running external in the summer with no water is risky, let alone 3.1 miles with a bunch of sweaty strangers around you.

Celebrate Your Finish

Whether you are first or final you did it, you ran a 5k. That in itself is a immense accomplishment. I still have my Color Run medal hanging in my room. It symbolizes the beginning of my fitness journey and my first milestone as a runner. Not to mention a bucket list check off.
